Astigmatism Treatments
Astigmatism can be treated with prescription glasses or contact glasses.
Prescription Glasses
A special prescription lens will be required if you are diagnosed with astigmatism. Our optical dispensary has a wide variety of frames you can choose from when ordering your new lenses.
Contact Lenses
There are several types of contact lenses available to help correct astigmatism. Your Waco optometrist will determine the best type of lens based on your refractive error.
Scleral Contact Lens — these types of contact lenses are larger than a typical contact lens. The edges of the lens rest on the white of the eye. Prior to inserting the lens into your eye, the center of the lens is filled with artificial tears. When the lens is placed over the eye, the artificial tears act as a dome over the cornea. This dome helps correct the irregularities in the cornea and reduce or eliminate blurry vision.
Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lens – these types of contacts are more commonly known as hard contact lenses. These hard contacts hold their shape instead of molding to the eye’s surface, as soft contact do. Many patients who opt for hard contact lenses have clearer vision but note they are not as comfortable as soft contact lenses.
Hybrid Contact Lenses – for patients that like the visual clarity of a hard lens but the comfort of a soft lens, a hybrid contact lens may be a good option. These lenses have a hard center with soft edges.
